For journalists and data professionals worldwide, Google’s announcement that Google Fusion Tables is shutting down means a lot of data will need to be migrated over the next few months. On a Panic Scale from 1 to 10 where 10 is “pass me a paper bag to breathe into”, this is maybe about a 5? Inconvenient, worth a grimace, but no need to scream: there are alternatives, and moving your data is easy using FME. Let’s look at a few options and how to start the migration process.

Key Functionality

To better understand what kind of new solution you’re looking for, let’s first look at what we’re losing with Google Fusion Tables:

  1. Web-based data visualization and maps.
  2. Data storage and management from various sources, especially spatial data.
  3. Automatic geocoding of tabular/spreadsheet data.
  4. Ability to collaborate on data tables and maps.
  5. Data sharing and publishing options.
  6. Basic joining, filtering, aggregating, querying.
  7. All of this in the cloud.
  8. All of this for free.

Consider which of those list items are important to you. While no alternative solution is exactly the same as Fusion Tables, FME makes it easy to get all of the functionality you want through one of the following options.

Popular Alternatives

ArcGIS Online

For location-based data — especially if your data is already in a GIS format — AGOL is a natural choice. This platform makes it easy to create maps and share them for viewing in web browsers. With Esri as the creator, it offers some of the world’s top GIS functionality in a web environment, from your choice of basemap to advanced analysis tools. Journalists should also check out Esri Story Maps for next-level interactivity and timeline integration.


CARTO is a cloud-based location intelligence platform with tools for displaying maps in a web browser. It offers all of the above functionality, is free for non-commercial use and students/educators, and is blissfully easy to use. Plus, it’s open source and based on PostGIS and PostgreSQL, so you know it’s not going anywhere any time soon.

BI solutions are unparalleled when it comes to generating beautiful, insightful visualizations like charts, graphs, and maps. If gaining insights from data is your priority, definitely consider Qlik, Tableau (Tableau Public is free), Microsoft Power BI, or Google’s own Google Data Studio.

A combination of free tools

If you’re after something truly tailored (and truly free), you can get all of the above functionality with your own custom integration of tools. For example:

  1. Store your data wherever it fits best, e.g. spreadsheets, PostGIS, SQLite …
  2. Pick your favourite cloud system to host it, e.g. AWS for big datasets or simply Google Sheets for spreadsheets,
  3. For the visualization component, build a web page using a free web mapping library like OpenLayers (see this blog for more).

With a universe of specialized apps and tools available, you can build your perfect data storage and visualization system that does everything Google Fusion Tables did and more. As for keeping the various pieces synchronized and up to date — and maybe adding functionality like automatic geocoding and filtering — that’s what FME is for.

How to migrate your data out of Google Fusion Tables

Get all your data out of Google Fusion Tables by building a workflow in FME. Here’s an example that shows how easy it is. The below FME Workspace extracts my ‘roads’ dataset from Google Fusion Tables and loads it into CARTO. I haven’t done any data transformation, but I could easily filter and restructure the data using any of FME’s 400+ transformers before loading it into CARTO. (Note you need to be using the paid version of CARTO in order to connect to it with an API key, as is the case in this FME Workspace.)

In FME, add a Google Fusion Tables Reader to connect to your data, and then send it to your new system. This FME Workspace is a simple Google Fusion Tables to CARTO migration.

    I suppose I did it the “hard” way. I built a new web front-end, wrote all the JavaScript, and created a json file to hold my locations.
    My map has all the bells and whistles as before, but with a few added. I have the map with my markers of course, and I have different marker icons for different types of locations. I have a blue radius circle that shows only the markers in a 10-mile radius. I have a “results” box that interacts with the map. (If I click on a location in the results list, it centers that marker and opens its infowindow. I can geolocate based on a provided text address and I have a “find me” button that geolocates based on the users IP location. There’s more, but you get the gest.
    The only thing that I am relying on from Google is the map itself. Everything else is hosted on my server and put on the map as an overlay. In a worst-case scenario, I could grab and API key for Bing maps, OpenStreet Maps, etc. and I’m back online.
    Writing my own code provided me a lot more options than using Fusion tables and the limitations that went with it. (specifically, on the markers and info-windows.)
    Now, I don’t have to worry about the future when Google-Sheets (or whatever) goes away as did the fusion tables.

    Read about a non profit organization who chose to use squarespace as its mechanism for building and staging a website. They were using a google research project called google fusion to display maps with annotations. Unfortunately, google is retiring the research project in December 3 2019. The non profit was looking for volunteers to help provide an alternative to google fusion. I found an open source solution called leaflet.js that could fill the void for them. I have a working example that should service the need they have. All we would need to solve their problem in full would be to migrate all csv files from their maps and either write webservices to grab tokenized rows from the origin csv files or hard code the csv files into the html (not good practice). Problem 1, squarespace provides an inflexible webservice api designed for e-commerce, it couldn’t be adapted to simply pass map annotation data to the page (so, unfortunately, we would need to hard code the data into the html). The mechanism to include leaflet.js into an html file is quite simple, and requires that you pull the library into the header, and you need to add a reference to your styling sheet, easy. Problem 2, squarespace provides code injection into their platform, but it will not provide that service unless you have a premium plan. Even if you use code injection as provided by squarespace, it is unclear if it will work with external libraries. If the non profit had been using a standard technical stack for web development, or even a more flexible one like wordpress, then leaflet.js could serve their need.

    We used google fusion tables to plot our jobs for our business on the maps. We have over 200,000 records. What would be the best alternative for us? We need to be able to search an address and see pins of all the jobs around it. Help please!!
