Learn the basics for using FME Server - no download required!
What is FME Server?
FME Server is a web-server application that leverages the power of FME Desktop to automate and manage data integration workflows. As a platform, FME can help your organization effectively and efficiently make better decisions backed by data.
Use FME Server to run workspaces on a schedule, create Automations, or to build self-serve data portals. Stay updated by setting up notifications that alert you and your team on the status of your data. With FME Server your data can keep flowing no matter what.
Publishing a Workspace
Building automated workflows in FME Server begins with authoring workspaces in FME Desktop. Publish your workspace from FME Desktop using your FME Server connection details.
Now you’ll be able to run your workspace on-demand according to customized Schedules or in response to real-time events via Automations in FME Server. When a workspace runs, it’s called a Job. See which Jobs have been completed, are in the queue, or are currently running, by using the Jobs drop-down in the navigation menu.
When you run a workspace, you’ll have various types of services to choose from. The most popular services are:
Data Download: Provides you with a URL from which you can download the resulting data from your Job.
Data Streaming: Streams the output from your Job directly to a client (ex. web browser).
Job Submitter: Runs a workflow when a request is made.
FME Server Essentials
Ready to get started? Below are some of the essential operations you’ll need to know to start working with FME Server.
Run a Job
From the navigation menu select "Run Workspace". Choose your repository, workspace, and service type, plus set any additional parameters you may need. Click “Run” to submit your Job.
With Automations, you can build workflows that run your data integration Job(s) when an event occurs, triggering a corresponding action to take place. For example, a new file added to your directory can trigger your workflow to integrate it with your database, and once it’s done, you and your team can be sent an email notification to update you on the status of your data.
Open the workspace you want to run directly in FME Server to see more details about how the workflow has been set up.
Create Server Apps
Create custom web pages to provide a self-serve portal, allowing the user to upload data to be transformed by your workflow, or to download data created as the output of a workflow. Sharing data and increasing accessibility is easy with FME Server Apps.
If you find yourself needing more processing power for a certain task, you can add as many Dynamic Engines as you need to complete the job. Once your task is complete, simply remove the engines. Dynamic Engines is an add-on feature with pricing based on CPU time rather than the number of engines added.
