Migrate Data from IFC to OBJ

Move your BIM models from a complex Industry Foundation Class STEP (IFC) format to a widely-used Wavefront OBJ format using FME. Once in OBJ format, FME lets you connect to iOS devices for use in augmented reality through the ARKit. Bring IFC models to life on your iPhone or tablet for 3D interactive viewing. Some other things you can do in this conversion are:

Extract a Simpler 3D Model For Viewing

IFC is a complex data format that can include attributes and a mix of both 2D and 3D structures. FME allows you to extract only the relevant 3D geometries to write out to OBJ, while still preserving textures. Use the Revit reader to read IFC through predefined filters to simplify your data for output into 3D or GIS, or use the IFC reader to read in the whole IFC structure, extracting only the data that you want.

Control How You Write Out Your OBJ

With FME, you have control over how you want to write out your OBJ. Choose to merge different datasets into one, to fanout your dataset to write out individual datasets, creating multiple OBJ files from one source, or to fanout by feature type.

Bring IFC Models into Augmented Reality As OBJ

To bring BIM data into augmented reality, FME zips up the OBJ file with its textures into an .fmear zipfile. This can then be uploaded onto the cloud and viewed in augmented reality using FME’s AR App on an iPhone or iPad.

About

IFC

IFC is an open file format used to describe building and construction industry data that was developed to facilitate interoperability in the architecture, engineering, and construction industries. It is commonly used as a collaboration or exchange format in BIM based projects to move 3D geometry and attribute data from one work environment to another.
